What is the Thermal 1-Touch®?

The Thermal 1-Touch® is a medical device that treats dry eye syndrome. The device applies heat and gentle pressure to the eyelids to warm the inner eye (Meibomian) glands and release natural oils embedded within the glands. The natural oils flow onto the tear film to prevent tears from evaporating quickly.

What is Meibomian gland dysfunction?

Meibomian glands are tiny sebaceous glands along the eyelids (very close to the waterline) that releases clear oils, or meibum, to preserve the health of the tear
film.

The tear film is an outer layer of the eye that protects the cornea and conjunctiva from environmental factors and maintains lubrication of the ocular
surface. Over time these glands may become blocked and fail to release the natural oils needed to keep the tear film stable. The accumulation of meibum
within the glands will lead to impaired gland function, therefore, causing Meibomian gland dysfunction and inducing common dry eye symptoms.

What is Meibomian gland expression?

In cases of moderate to severe dry eye, increased blockage of Meibomian glands will not benefit from hot compresses and lid massages alone. The purpose of an
in-office Meibomian gland expression, in addition with the Thermal 1-touch®, is to manually express the glands to clear excessive blockage and release normal meibum onto the tear film.

The goal of the Thermal 1-Touch® treatment and Meibomian gland expression is to overall improve ocular comfort and maintain the health of the eye itself!
